Have you have tried every diet you can think of and lost confidence in yourself that you can be successful?

For most of my life, I struggling with overeating, emotional eating, weight loss and gain and criticised myself for the way I looked. I was obsessed with the number that appeared on the scale and how I appeared in the mirror.

Trust me, I tried every “band aid “diet that was available and trendy weight-loss programs, but I kept repeating the same cycle of losing and regaining.

And I could never stick to any of these regimes because they were all too restrictive and didn’t fit into my lifestyle.

Simply put, Diets Don’t Work (unless you change your thinking)

We’ve all heard that to change your body (lose weight) long term, you need to be in calorie deficit. But that advice is incomplete.

Sure, you need a calorie deficit to drop pounds but you need something much more important than that.

If you have tried — and failed — to lose weight and keep it off, the reason you continue to struggle lies in your thinking.

To achieve any life change, you must first experience a brain change.

After many struggles with emotional eating and trying every diet, every therapy, and reading every book on the subject, nothing worked for me until I discovered the life-altering truth: the key to sustainable change through the mind.

I finally made peace with food following a massive mind transformation, in other words I learned how to manage stress, addressed my inner critic, and developed healthier thoughts and beliefs.

The Missing Ingredient

Most diets are too ‘generic’ and are band-aid solutions that fail to achieve long-lasting results.

They have a poor track-record of long-term weight maintenance, mainly because they fail to address the psychological causes of overeating behaviours.

Most diets are too ‘generic’ and are band-aid solutions that fail to achieve long-lasting results.

And let’s face it – none of these diets explain the difference that managing your mind will make to quit the self-sabotaging beliefs and behaviours that get in the way of you creating the life you crave.

The Right Attitude

Let’s face it – you can have the best diet and plans and goals, but you will only use them if you have the right attitude.

Our brain tends to run on automatic pilot, and we are not even aware of our thinking.

Picture yourself at the end of a long day where you’ve been run off your feet.

What do you reach for?

  • Fresh air?
  • A bath?
  • A walk?
  • Or a glass of wine or some chocolate?

The reality is, what you believe causes you to have certain thoughts, and therefore, to act a certain way.

Before you can retrain your body, you must first retrain the way you think.

Retrain Your Brain

According to a study in the International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being , women are starting to recognise that it is not the diet; it is the habits that are driven by their emotional state that they need to change in order to achieve  a permanent weight loss solution. (to lose weight and keep it off).

If you want to change the outside, you must first change the inside

So how do you go about to change the inside?

Understanding the link between your thoughts, emotions, and behaviour is the first step in changing your brain’s thinking patterns

Change the Attention of Your Thoughts

Changing the focus of your thoughts is necessary because what you think directly affects how you feel, and how you feel directly affects how your body reacts, and how your body reacts directly influences how you act, and how you act creates the results you see in your life.

“If you get the inside right, the outside will fall into place.”—Eckhart Tolle

And it all begins with your thoughts—the life you experience comes from the thoughts you actively engage in

In other words, as Earl Nightingale rightfully said “You become what you think about all day long”

Create New Behavioural Patterns

You create new behavioural patterns by creating new thought patterns.

  • Learning to catch your thoughts, questioning them, and managing them can help you to rewire your habits of thought.
  • And it doesn’t need to be complicated, becoming aware of your thoughts is the first step in this change process.

Here are some tips to help you develop new thought patterns:

  • Pay attention to your thoughts and feelings.
  • Pay attention to the thoughts you are focusing on.

This is known as Metacognition – a process of being aware of your thinking, sometimes referred to as “thinking about thinking” and an understanding of the patterns behind them.

When we notice ourselves having an inner dialogue about our thinking and it prompts us to evaluate our learning or problem-solving processes, we are experiencing metacognition at work. This skill helps us think better, make sound decisions, and solve problems more effectively.

The next time you experience a strong emotion, pause and bring your awareness to it and ask yourself:

  • What am I focusing my attention on right now?”
  • “Why am I feeling this way?”
  • “What kind of emotion am I experiencing right now?”

This will help you to work out what you’re feeling and what thoughts are causing you to feel this emotion.

You’ll be able to figure out what emotions you’re experiencing and what thoughts are causing them.

Retrain Your Brain

When you learn to catch your thoughts, question them, and manage them you can rewire your habits of thought.

If you spend 5-10 minutes a day rewiring negative thoughts to something more neutral you will manage stress differently and stop reacting to things in your life – and start finding the courage and confidence to do what is best for you.

Here’s an exercise to help you manage your thinking.

Take a moment right now and observe your thoughts.

Write down one negative statement that you say to yourself -THEN-change it to a more helpful, beneficial thought that is believable.

As you’ve probably noticed, your beliefs are formed from the thoughts that you give the most attention to.
